Finland’s symphonic Death Metallers impressed me a great deal with their on 4-track EP titled Fall of Atlas, released at the beginning of January 2014. I remember comparing them to bands like Behemoth, Shade Empire and Dimmu Borgir and predicted that on their next release they might sound even more ambitious and pompous.
The Reign of the 7th Sector is the 8-track debut album from these Finnish maestros of technical and symphonic Death Metal. It sees them stretching their sound further into complexity while adding even more symphonic and atmospheric elements into their songs without getting them ridiculously big. All this makes The Reign of the 7th Sector the ace of spades in my opinion. There’s enough power, ambitiousness and songwriting skill in the Whorion camp to combine these elements for one purpose (e.g. creating something darn spectacular and unique). Whorion have kept the bar of creativity and innovation high for their debut album and the worldwide Metal community will undoubtedly respect their efforts.
The Reign of the 7th Sector did not come completely out of the woodwork for me as I expected them to bless us with a challenging and “big” symphonic and complex Death Metal album. So they did and they can be very proud of it.
